Exposure to a Novel Insecticide Formulation on Maize and Concrete Reduces Movement by the Stored Product Pests, Prostephanus truncatus (Horn) and Sitophilus zeamais (Motschulsky)

چکیده

Two major stored products pests of maize are the Prostephanus truncatus (Horn) (larger grain borer) and Sitophilus zeamais (Motschulsky) (maize weevil). Under climate change, P. may be expected to shift its distribution northward farther into United States (US). Thus, there is a critical need develop diversified chemical control tools in post-harvest supply chain for these two species. In this study, we investigated efficacy novel insecticide formulation, containing insect growth regulator, S-methoprene, combined with pyrethroid, deltamethrin synergist piperonyl butoxide (Central Life Science, Schaumberg, IL, US), compared existing commercial standard formulation without synergist, controls at inducing direct mortality sublethal changes movement on treated grains as protectant, concrete surface treatment. Mortality adults was assessed visually, while tracked network camera coupled Ethovision software that automatically recorded velocity distance moved by both species, after continuous exposure material 4–168 h. The significantly induced reducing multiple-fold exposed even relatively brief periods. fact, just effective older but used only fraction active ingredients, thus it more cost-effective. Overall, promising tool controlling S. bulk storage around other food facilities.

Infochemical-mediated preference behavior of the maize weevil, Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky, when searching for its hosts

Behavioral responses of S. zeamais to odours from pulverized wheat, brown rice, sorghum, buckwheat, peanut and cork were compared in a Y-tube-olfactometerbioassay. Results showed that both sexes responded to host volatiles and males were more sensitive than females. The strongest responses to grains of wheat and brown rice were found, and insects reared on these were dramatically heavier than o...

screening for new sources of resistance to sitophilus zeamais motschulsky (coleoptera: curculionidae) infestation in stored maize genotypes

new sources of maize resistance to the maize weevil, sitophilus zeamais infestation are indispensable in successful breeding programs against post harvest grain damage. the study investigated the characters and mechanisms that confer resistance to weevil infestation using twenty elite maize genotypes. detailed morphological and physical studies were conducted on whole-maize grain. the grain hul...

Responses to colour and host odour cues in three cereal pest species, in the context of ecology and control.

Many insects show a greater attraction to multimodal cues, e.g. odour and colour combined, than to either cue alone. Despite the potential to apply the knowledge to improve control strategies, studies of multiple stimuli have not been undertaken for stored product pest insects. We tested orientation towards a food odour (crushed white maize) in combination with a colour cue (coloured paper with...

Resistance of maize varieties to the maize weevil Sitophilus zeamais (Motsch.) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae)

This study aimed at evaluating commonly used maize varieties, collected from Melkasa and Bako Agricultural Research Centers and Haramaya University, Ethiopia, against the maize weevil Sitophilus zeamais Motsch., one of the most important cosmopolitan stored product pests in maize. A total of 13 improved maize varieties were screened for their relative susceptibility to S. zeamais. The Dobie ind...

Rearing the Maize Weevil, Sitophilus zeamais, on an Artificial Maize—Cassava Diet

Dry artificial diet pellets prepared with maize, cassava chips, and amino acid supplements (lysine and methionine) were evaluated for mass culture of Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), a highly polyphagous pest of many stored grains. Evaluation was done in the laboratory at temperature 26 ± 2 °C, 60-70% RH, 12:12 L:D photoperiod. The artificial diet was compounded from ...
